Title: World’s largest photography contest comes to Malta

Wiki Loves Monuments, the Guinness World Record holder for the largest photography contest, is coming to Malta for the first time in 2016. The contest brings together photographers from around the world to take stunning pictures of our cultural heritage to be shared on Wikipedia. The contest begins on 1 September and the deadline for submissions is 30 September. Everyone is invited to take part – all you need is a camera and the will to participate!
A jury composed of experts within the field of cultural heritage, photography and Wikipedia will be selecting a number of winning entries which will be awarded prizes, courtesy of Photocity of Valletta. Winning entries will also be exhibited by Spazju Kreattiv at St James Cavalier in Valletta throughout November and December. 10 winning submissions will be nominated for the international Wiki Loves Monuments contest, where the winner can choose from a €1,000 cash prize or a scholarship of up to €2,000 to Wikimania 2017 in Montreal, Canada.
Since the contest started in 2010 nearly 1.5 million photographs have been uploaded. Winning photos from 2015 included an aerial photograph of Westerheversand Lighthouse in Germany, the Museum of the Inconfidência in Brazil, and the interior of the Vakil Mosque in Iran. Millions of people across the world benefit from people like you contributing their images.
More than 6,000 people from 33 countries took part in last year’s contest. The contest is growing this year with 40 countries across six continents running local contests. Aside from Malta, there are eight first time participants including Nigeria, Greece, and Bangladesh.
Entrants need to own the copyright of their submissions and release them under an open licence. You can use Wiki Loves Monuments’ interactive map to explore heritage near you and find what still needs to be photographed. The overall winners will be announced in December 2016. Participation is free and open to all. An introductory workshop for those interested in participating will take place on Tuesday 6 September at 6pm at Spazju Kreattiv’s Spot A inside St James Cavalier in Valletta.
